The longest shape on the hand

A marquise has the largest face up area of any cut at a given carat weight. Its boat outline, pointed at both ends, spreads along the finger and draws the eye up the hand, which is why it makes fingers look longer than a round or a cushion of the same weight. A 2 carat marquise here measures roughly 13 by 6.5 millimetres.

Why the accents are spaced, not solid

A long centre stone on a fully paved band can start to look heavy, because the eye reads one unbroken line from knuckle to knuckle. Setting the accents apart, each one a little smaller as it moves away from the centre, breaks that line into points of light. It also leaves more polished metal visible, which matters most in rose and yellow gold where the colour of the band is part of the design.

The points are covered

Both ends of a marquise are sharp and are the first thing to chip if they are left exposed. Each point here sits in a v claw that wraps around the two edges meeting at the tip, so the metal protects the stone from the side rather than pressing down on it from above.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose gold is photographed here, and the warm metal between the spaced accents is a large part of why this version works. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K the everyday balance, 18K the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The accent diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

About the bow tie

Every marquise can show a bow tie, a dark band across the waist of the stone caused by the proportions of the cut rather than by colour or clarity. No certificate grades it, and it is the single most common disappointment with this shape. We check every marquise by eye and reject the ones that show it.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The accent stones are graded down in size along each shoulder and set by hand under a microscope, so the spacing stays even on both sides of the ring. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush underneath the marquise through the open gallery, which is where a long stone traps the most. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The accent stones are matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The shoulder stones are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes. The shank is straight and the setting is raised above it, so a straight wedding ring sits close on both sides.

Can it be resized? Easily. The accents stop well before the back of the band, leaving plain metal to work with.

Do the points catch on things? Not when they are set in v claws, as they are here. The metal, not the diamond, meets the world first.
