How the flower is built

Four small clusters sit around the centre stone, two at the top and two at the bottom, each made of a marquise and a pear set at slightly different angles. Because no two petals are aligned, the head never reads as a symmetrical halo. It reads as something grown, which is the entire point of a nature inspired design and the thing that most of them fail to achieve.

Why pears and marquises rather than rounds

Round accents make a halo. Tapered accents make petals. A marquise has two points and a pear has one, so both stones have a direction, and directional stones can be pointed outward to suggest growth. Sixteen round diamonds arranged in the same positions would simply look like a wide halo with gaps in it.

It wears smaller than it looks

The clusters spread across the finger rather than upward. The centre stone sits low, the petals sit lower still, and the whole head is barely taller than a plain solitaire. It photographs like a statement ring and wears like an everyday one.

Both points guarded

The centre marquise has two tips, the thinnest part of the stone. Each sits inside a v claw that wraps the edges either side of the point rather than pressing down on it.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here and is the natural choice, since warm metal between the petals reads as stem and leaf. Rose gold gives a softer, more romantic version of the same idea. White gold makes the petals merge and the design becomes more abstract. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every petal stone is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The petals are laid out around your individual centre stone and the angles adjusted by eye, because a cluster that is mathematically even looks wrong and a cluster that is slightly irregular looks alive. Every accent is set by hand under a microscope. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work the brush into the joints between the petals, which is where lotion collects, and underneath the head. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. Every petal stone is matched to the same grade.

Does the carat weight include the petals? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The petal clusters are in addition and are scaled to the centre.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The lower petals extend over the shank, so a straight band leaves a small gap. A curved or contoured band follows the outline properly, and many customers wear this one alone.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band itself carries no stones, so resizing does not disturb the clusters.
