Repeating the shape

Most accent bands use rounds because they are easy. Using marquises means every accent has to be angled along the axis of the shank and every point needs its own claw, but it pays off. The eye reads the small marquises as echoes of the big one, which makes the centre stone look longer and the whole ring look designed as a single object.

Why a marquise is the longest looking cut

A marquise is an ellipse drawn to two points. It has the largest face up area per carat of any common cut, because so little of its weight is buried in depth. Worn lengthwise it stretches the finger more than any other shape. If you want maximum visual size for the carat weight, this is the cut that delivers it.

Both points protected

A marquise has two tips rather than one, and both are the thinnest part of the stone. Each sits inside a v shaped claw that wraps the edges rather than pressing on the point itself. The accent marquises along the band are guarded the same way.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold, as photographed, gives the band its vintage rhythm. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Every marquise on the band is aligned by eye under a microscope, because one sitting even slightly off axis breaks the line immediately. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. The open metal between the accents rinses clean easily. Check the v claws at both ends of the centre stone from time to time. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The marquise and round accents are matched to the same grade.

Are marquise points fragile? They are the thinnest part of the stone, which is why every one on this ring, centre and accents, sits inside a v claw rather than a plain round claw.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? The accent stones sit proud of the shank, so a straight band leaves small gaps. A contoured band, or a matching marquise and round band, sits much better.

Can it be resized? Within a size or two. The accents run a long way round, so tell us your size as accurately as you can.
