A marquise cut laboratory grown diamond inside a close halo that follows its pointed outline, on a band set with pave along both shoulders. The halo comes to a point at each end, so the ring keeps the long narrow shape of the centre stone rather than rounding it off.

A halo with two points

The small stones have to reduce in size as they approach each tip, and the last stone at each end must sit exactly on the point. Get it wrong and the halo looks blunt, which destroys the shape people choose a marquise for in the first place. It is the most demanding halo we set.

Length on the hand

A marquise is already the longest shape for its weight. Adding a halo extends it further, and the pave band carries the line down the finger, so a two carat centre reads closer to three and fills the finger from knuckle to knuckle.

The points are protected twice

Each tip sits inside a full claw, and the halo surrounds it beyond that. On a shape where the points are the vulnerable part, a halo is genuinely protective rather than only decorative.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. A yellow band with a white metal halo makes the centre stone read larger; tell us if you want it made that way. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The halo is built around the measured stone so it follows that particular marquise, with the stones graded down towards each tip, and the pave is set last. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring worn alongside another ring. That piece is separate and is not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing under the halo from below and along both sides of the pave. Check the point claws once a year. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre marquise and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the halo and pave? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. All accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does a halo make a marquise look wider? Slightly, but it lengthens it more, because the halo follows the outline rather than rounding it. The proportions of the stone are preserved.

Will a wedding band sit flush? The halo overhangs at the point, so a straight band leaves a small gap. A chevron band follows the tip exactly, and we make those to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
