The full bezel

A bezel is a continuous collar of metal pressed over the girdle of the stone. It is the oldest setting there is and still the most secure. Nothing sticks up to catch on a jumper, a glove or a child's hair, and the two points of the marquise, normally the weakest part of the stone, are fully enclosed rather than held under a claw. If you work with your hands, this is the setting to choose.

Cut for the shape

Making a bezel for a round stone is straightforward. Making one for a marquise is not: the rim has to taper to a sharp point at both ends and stay an even thickness all the way around the curve, or the whole thing looks clumsy. It is cut and chased by hand around your individual stone.

The flared shoulder

The band stays narrow around the back of the finger and widens as it rises, splitting into a shallow V that meets the underside of the bezel. It lifts the stone just clear of the finger, so light gets underneath, while keeping the total height low.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is photographed here, and a warm rim around a colourless stone is the classic bezel look. In white gold the metal and the diamond merge and the stone appears larger. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. A bezel cannot be made in advance and fitted later, because it has to match one stone exactly. Yours is formed around your marquise from the start. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. A bezel keeps dirt out far better than claws, so this is one of the easiest settings to keep clean. Wipe the outside of the rim to keep the polish bright.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Does a bezel make the diamond look smaller? The rim covers the very edge of the stone, but it also adds its own outline, so most people find a bezel set marquise reads slightly larger overall, not smaller.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes. The bezel sits low and the shoulder tapers away, so a straight band sits close on both sides.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain, so resizing is straightforward and does not disturb the setting.
