Why the accents fan out

A marquise is a long shape that narrows to a point at each end. Put it straight onto a thin band and the transition is abrupt: wide stone, then nothing. The fanned clusters fill that step, spreading from the widest part of the diamond down to the shank, so the outline of the ring tapers the way the stone does.

A deliberately antique arrangement

The accents are not a straight line of pave. They sit at different angles in small groups, the way Victorian and Edwardian rings were built, which gives the ring a made-by-hand character that continuous pave never has.

The points are covered

Each tip of the marquise is a thin edge of diamond and the place where damage occurs. Both sit inside full claws rather than standing clear of them, which costs a little of the outline and saves the stone.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which suits its antique character, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The accent diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each fan is laid out against the measured centre stone, since how far it should spread depends on the width of the marquise, and every accent gets its own seat cut at its own angle. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working into each fan from underneath where the small stones sit closest together. Check the point claws once a year, as you would on any marquise. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre marquise and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The fanned accents are in addition and are scaled to suit it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Close, and closer than with full length pave, since the accents stop well before the back of the ring. A shaped band tucks under the fans neatly.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have it set east west? Yes, lying across the finger with the fans at either end instead. Tell us when you order.
