A marquise cut laboratory grown diamond lying east west across the finger, held along one long side by a wall of metal that sweeps up out of the band and closes over the tip. The other side stays open, so the stone is half framed and half exposed, and the band curves away beneath it rather than running straight.

Half bezel, not full

A full bezel would close the whole outline in metal and shorten the stone. Wrapping only one side leaves the long curve of the marquise visible against skin on the other, and covers the tip, which is the part that chips. You get the protection where it is needed and the outline where it matters.

Set east west

Turned across the finger instead of along it, a marquise stops pointing at the fingertip and starts spanning the hand. It looks wider and sits lower, it will not catch on a sleeve the way a north south marquise can, and it reads as quietly modern rather than formal.

The band follows the stone

The shank is not a circle with a setting on top. It rises on one side, dips under the stone and lifts again, so the metal and the diamond form one continuous line. That is why the ring looks carved rather than assembled.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which gives the strongest contrast at the bezel wall, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel wall is formed against the measured stone so it follows the curve of the marquise exactly along its whole length, with no gap at the tip. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Several of the lifestyle photographs show this ring worn with a curved band set with small diamonds. That band is a separate piece and is not included. We make one shaped to follow this ring, so ask us if you would like the pair.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushing along the open side of the stone and under the curve of the band. A half bezel collects less than claws do. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight.

Is the point protected? Yes. The bezel wall closes over the tip on the side it wraps, which is the usual failure point on a marquise.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band will not follow the curve. We make a shaped band for this ring, which is what the photographs show, and it is sold separately.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plainest. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.

Can I have it set north south instead? Yes, running along the finger in the same half bezel. Tell us when you order.
