A matte finish, on purpose

Most engagement rings are mirror polished, which makes the metal compete with the stones. This one is brushed to a soft satin, so the gold reads as a quiet surface and the diamonds are the only thing reflecting. It also wears more gracefully: a matte finish absorbs the small scratches of daily life instead of showing them. If you would rather have it polished, we will make it that way at no extra cost.

Baguettes running with the band

The side stones are rectangles set flush into the metal, following the curve of the shank rather than sitting on top of it. Nothing is raised, nothing snags, and the line of straight edges either side of the marquise gives the ring its deco character.

Set east west

Turned across the finger rather than along it, the marquise spans the hand and sits low. It will not catch on a sleeve, and it lines up with the baguettes to make one continuous horizontal band across the top of the ring.

The points are protected

Both tips of the marquise sit within the metal of the setting rather than standing clear of it, which is where a marquise almost always chips. On a ring designed to be worn every day, that detail matters more than any other.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in matte yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years, and a matte finish in white gold needs redoing at the same time.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The baguettes are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which is visible on a step cut accent in a way it is not on pave.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The band is shaped first, then each baguette seat is cut into the curve at its own angle, and the matte finish is applied last so that setting does not mark it. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Do not use a polishing cloth on the matte surfaces, as it will burnish them shiny in patches; send the ring to us instead and we will refinish it. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre marquise and every baguette are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the baguettes? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre marquise. The baguettes are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Does the matte finish wear off? It softens gradually with wear, which most people like. We refinish it free of charge whenever you send the ring in.

Will a wedding band sit flush? The shank curves, so a straight band leaves a small gap. We make a shaped band to follow it; ask us if you would like the pair.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back. One or two sizes either way is straightforward, and we refinish the matte surface afterwards.
