Three step cuts, one line

Most three stone rings mix cuts, putting brilliant sides against a step cut centre or the other way round. This one keeps all three step cut, so the facets run in the same direction across the whole head and the ring reads as a single deliberate object rather than a centre stone with decorations. It is the quieter, more architectural version of a three stone ring, and it is the one that suits an emerald cut best.

Why tapered baguettes and not trillions

A tapered baguette is a long, narrow rectangle that narrows toward the outer end. Set against the flat side of an emerald cut it meets the girdle edge to edge with no gap, then draws the eye outward along the finger. A trillion points away and breaks the line; a plain baguette without the taper stops it dead. The taper is what makes the design flow.

Clarity has nowhere to hide

A step cut's open table shows everything inside the stone, so inclusions that would vanish in a brilliant are plainly visible in an emerald cut. That applies to the baguettes as much as the centre. This is why the VVS2 grade throughout is a requirement on this design rather than an upsell.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The baguettes are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade, which on an all step cut ring is unavoidable: three open tables side by side would show any mismatch immediately.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Each pair of baguettes is cut to the measurements of the individual centre stone so the contact edges meet the emerald with no gap, and the pair is matched to each other for length and taper before setting. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Step cut stones show dirt more readily than brilliants because their flat facets have nowhere to hide it, so clean all three as often as each other. Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre emerald cut and both tapered baguettes are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the side stones? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut. The baguettes are in addition and are scaled to the centre stone.

Is an emerald cut less sparkly? Different rather than less. It gives long broad flashes instead of rapid fire, and this design leans into that rather than fighting it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. The baguettes sit low against the shank, so a straight band meets it cleanly on both sides. This is one of the easiest designs to pair.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
