An emerald cut lab grown diamond in four claws with a smaller emerald cut diamond on each side, all three set north to south on a plain slim band.

This is the purest form of the three stone emerald cut ring, and the one most people picture when they think of Art Deco jewellery. All three stones are step cuts, all three are rectangles with cropped corners, and all three are set the same way up, so the head reads as one long band of parallel lines running across the finger. Nothing about it is decorative. The whole effect comes from repetition and from the fact that step cut facets produce broad calm flashes rather than scattered fire, so the eye reads the outline of the stones rather than the sparkle coming off them.

Matching side stones to a centre is far harder with step cuts than with brilliants. The length to width ratio of each side stone has to echo the centre, the rows of steps have to line up when the ring is viewed straight on, and because the tables are wide open any difference in body colour between the three stones is obvious. Each ring is assembled from stones selected together for exactly that reason. Behind the head the band is completely plain, which is the correct choice here, because a set piece of geometry needs nothing added to it.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Why are matching step cut sides difficult
The ratio, the step alignment and the body colour of all three stones have to agree, and a wide open table hides none of it. Brilliants forgive small differences because their fire distracts the eye. Step cuts do not.

Do emerald cuts show inclusions more than other shapes
Yes. The open step facets hide far less than a brilliant does, which is why we use VVS2 clarity for the centre stone and VS for the sides.

Will a wedding band sit flush
Yes. All three stones are set at the same height on a straight shank, so a plain band meets it cleanly.
