Matched cuts, not mixed ones

Most three stone rings pair a centre with round, pear or tapered baguette side stones. This one repeats the emerald cut on both sides. Matching the cut means the facet pattern runs straight across all three stones, so when the ring moves, the hall of mirrors flash travels from one stone to the next as a single line of light.

The three stone format carries its own meaning, often read as past, present and future. Whatever you make of that, it is also a practical way to get more width and presence on the finger without choosing a much larger centre stone.

The emerald cut

An emerald cut is a step cut: long parallel facets running down from a wide open table. It trades the fine glitter of a brilliant for broad, calm flashes, and because the table is open it shows its interior clearly. That is why every centre stone here is E colour and VVS2 clarity, and why the side stones are matched to the same grade. On three step cuts in a row, a weaker side stone would be obvious.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White metal lets the three stones merge into one bright bar. Yellow gold frames each stone separately and gives the ring an Art Deco feel that suits step cuts. Rose gold softens the geometry. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. It is included free with every metal and every carat weight.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The side stones are chosen after the centre, so their proportions and table widths line up with it, then all three are set and the ring is finished by hand for your carat weight and finger size. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush will keep it bright. Brush between the stones and underneath the head, where soap gathers. Step cuts show a film of grease quickly, so a fortnightly clean makes a visible difference. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity on every metal and carat weight, and the two side stones are matched to the same grade.

How big are the side stones? They are scaled to the centre so the three step in proportion. A larger centre carries larger sides.

Is the IGI certificate for all three stones? The IGI report covers the centre stone. The side stones are graded and matched in our workshop.

Will a wedding band sit flush? A straight band sits alongside it well, because the three stone head is long and low rather than tall.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank below the head is plain.
