A band that behaves like a ribbon

The shank does not run straight under the stone. It loops out to one side, doubles back beneath the setting and rises again, so from every angle you see a different curve. The round diamonds are set along the outer edge of that sweep, largest nearest the centre stone and smaller as the metal falls away, which makes the curve look like it is moving even when the hand is still.

Why an emerald cut in the middle of all that

A step cut is the calmest shape there is: straight edges, flat planes, broad slow flashes. Dropping one into a setting this restless gives the eye somewhere to land. A brilliant in the same mount would compete with the accents and the whole thing would read as busy.

The emerald cut

Rows of long parallel facets rather than the many small triangles of a brilliant. You look straight into the stone rather than at a surface of sparkle, which is why colour and clarity matter more on this shape than on any other. Ours are E colour and VVS2.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, which shows the sweep of the band best, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. The accent diamonds are matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The curve is shaped by hand and polished along its whole length, since a flat spot in a sweep this exposed is visible immediately, and each accent is seated separately because the surface is turning beneath it. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

One of the photographs shows this ring worn with a curved band shaped to nest against it. That band is a separate piece and is not included. We make it to match, so ask us if you would like the pair.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, following the curve on both sides and brushing behind the centre stone. An emerald cut has open corners, so avoid knocking the ring against hard edges. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre stone and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut. The round diamonds on the curve are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not a straight one, because the shank curves. The shaped band in the photographs is made for exactly this, and it is sold separately.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back, though the curve limits how far we can go. One size either way is safe; beyond that we would rather remake it.

Can I have a different centre shape? Yes. An oval or an elongated cushion sits well in this setting. Tell us when you order.
