This is the classic version of an emerald cut engagement ring. A single lab grown diamond is raised on a cathedral setting, and a slim band carries one scalloped row of pave diamonds along each shoulder.

A cathedral setting means the shoulders of the band rise up in an arch to meet the centre stone instead of stopping flat below it. Two things follow from that. The stone sits a little higher and is easier to see from the side, and the ring becomes stronger at the point where most engagement rings take the hardest knocks.

The pave is scalloped, which means the metal between the diamonds is cut away in small curves so the stones appear to float on the edge of the band. Our setters raise four tiny beads over each diamond by hand. The row stops a little past the halfway point on each side, so the back of the band stays plain and can be resized easily later.

Everything about the proportions is kept restrained. The band is narrow, the claws are slim and set at the four corners of the step cut, and the basket underneath is left open. That is deliberate. An emerald cut has a long clean table and a staircase of facets below it, and the less metal you place around it, the more of that structure you actually see.

Is the centre stone a real diamond?
Yes. A lab grown diamond has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same brilliance as a mined diamond. Only its origin is different.

Is a certificate included?
Yes. An IGI certificate for the centre stone is included at no extra cost and lists the carat weight, colour, clarity, measurements and laboratory grown origin.

How is this different from your other pave shoulder emerald cut rings?
This is the plainest of them. There is no hidden halo, no milgrain, no second row and no decoration under the stone. It is a single scalloped pave row on a slim cathedral band, which makes it the most classic and the easiest to pair with any wedding band.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it?
Yes. The cathedral arms rise from the band rather than flaring outward, so a straight wedding band sits neatly against this ring on both sides. That is one of the main reasons people choose this style.

What does a cathedral setting do?
It lifts the centre stone slightly and supports it with arches on both sides. The stone is more visible in profile and the setting is reinforced exactly where a ring is most likely to be knocked.

Which carat weight suits this ring?
All four are made for it. Because the band is slim and undecorated, larger stones look particularly striking here. A 4 or 5 carat emerald cut on a narrow band creates a strong contrast that a wider band would soften.

Is an emerald cut good for everyday wear?
Yes. The corners of an emerald cut are cut at an angle rather than left as sharp points, and the claws here sit directly over those corners.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush. Brush under the open basket as well as over the pave, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An open basket makes this design very easy to keep clean.
