An emerald cut lab grown diamond in four claws on a knife edge band whose shoulders are cut with a running scroll pattern and finished on both edges with milgrain beading.

This is engraving rather than casting. The scroll is cut into the metal with a graver, so each curl has a bright angled facet where the tool has lifted the surface, and those facets catch light in a way a moulded pattern never does. The pattern runs the length of both shoulders and continues around the outside of the shank, and along both edges of the band it is bordered by milgrain, a fine row of raised beads worked in with a knurling wheel. Milgrain is the detail that dates the style. It belongs to Edwardian and Art Deco work, and it softens the edge of a band so the metal reads as textile rather than as metal.

Nothing is set into the band. The whole surface is metal, worked, and that is the point of pairing it with an emerald cut. A step cut gives long calm flashes rather than fast fire, and against a shoulder full of engraved detail it stays the still centre of the ring. The band tapers and rises to a knife edge along its top line, which narrows the visual width of the shank and makes the centre stone look wider than it is.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What is milgrain
A border of tiny raised beads worked along the edge of a band with a knurling wheel. It is a hallmark of Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery and it softens the outline of the metal.

Is the engraving hand cut or cast
Hand cut with a graver. Each curl of the scroll has a bright angled facet left by the tool, which is why hand engraving catches light and a cast pattern looks flat.

Will the engraving wear away
It wears very slowly, and mostly on the underside of the shank where the finger rubs. We can recut and refresh the pattern for you at any time as part of our lifetime service.

Why pair a vintage band with a plain emerald cut
A step cut gives broad slow flashes rather than fast sparkle, so it stays calm against a busy engraved shoulder. A brilliant would compete with the pattern instead of sitting above it.

Do emerald cuts show inclusions more than other shapes
Yes. The open step facets hide far less than a brilliant does, which is why we use VVS2 clarity for the centre stone.

Can this ring be resized
Yes, and we prefer to size it at the back where the engraving can be recut cleanly afterward. Free within the first year.

How is this different from your other vintage emerald cut rings
Others use filigree openwork, a bezel with milgrain only, or pave shoulders under a milgrain edge. This is the only one where a full hand engraved scroll runs the whole shank with no stones set into it.
