An emerald cut lab grown diamond set in a milgrain edged collar with four corner claws, on a cathedral band hand engraved with an acanthus scroll and finished with milgrain along every edge.

A cathedral shoulder is the arch of metal that rises from the shank on each side and carries the head between them, and it is the reason this ring looks the way it does. The arches lift the emerald cut clear of the finger and give the engraver a broad curved surface to work on, so the acanthus scroll runs up the flank of each arch where it is most visible and continues around the outside of the shank. Every curl is cut with a graver, and the bright angled facet the tool leaves is what makes hand engraving catch light where a moulded pattern stays flat.

Milgrain does the rest of the work. It borders the top and bottom edge of both flanks, runs along the arch of each cathedral shoulder, and rings the collar that holds the stone, so almost every edge on the ring is beaded. On top of all of that the emerald cut sits completely plain, four claws and nothing else, which is exactly the balance a heavily worked antique ring needs.

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What is a cathedral setting
The shank rises into two arches that carry the head between them, like the arches of a cathedral. It lifts the stone, adds strength, and gives an engraver a broad curved surface to work on.

Is the engraving hand cut
Yes, cut with a graver. Each curl has a bright angled facet left by the tool, which is why hand engraving catches light and a cast pattern looks flat.

What is milgrain
A border of tiny raised beads worked with a knurling wheel. On this ring it edges the collar, both cathedral arches and both flanks of the band.

Will the engraving wear away
Very slowly, and mostly on the underside of the shank. We recut and refresh the pattern for you at any time as part of our lifetime service.

Do emerald cuts show inclusions more than other shapes
Yes. The open step facets hide far less than a brilliant does, which is why we use VVS2 clarity for the centre stone.

Can this ring be resized
Within a modest range, and sizing means recutting the engraving at the join, which we do as part of our service.

How is this different from your other engraved emerald cut rings
One uses a slim knife edge shank with a shallow running scroll, another a wide flat band carved with deep filigree. This is the only one built on cathedral arches, with the engraving carried up the shoulders.
