An emerald cut lab grown diamond held in four ball tipped claws on a wide flat band carved with an open filigree scroll and bordered with milgrain on every edge.

The filigree here is cut deep rather than scratched into the surface. Each curl of the scroll is carved back until it stands clear of the metal behind it, so the pattern has real relief and casts its own small shadows, and the recessed ground between the curls is left matte while the raised scroll is polished. That contrast is what makes carved filigree read from across a room rather than only in the hand. It runs along both sides of the band, across both shoulders and continues around the outside of the shank.

Milgrain borders every edge, top and bottom on both flanks, which is a great deal of beading on one ring and is the reason it reads so clearly as Edwardian work. The claws are finished with rounded ball tips rather than being filed to a flat pad, another period detail, and they sit on a raised collar that lifts the emerald cut clear of all the metalwork below it. Nothing about the band is set with stones. It is entirely worked metal, and the diamond is the only gem on the ring.

Frequently asked questions

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What is filigree
Openwork metal, either carved back from a solid band as it is here, or built up from fine wire. Carved filigree has more depth and more strength than wirework and holds up far better to daily wear.

What is milgrain
A border of tiny raised beads worked into the edge of the metal with a knurling wheel. It is a hallmark of Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery.

Why are the claws ball tipped
It is a period detail. A rounded tip catches light like a small bead and softens the outline of the setting, where a flat filed pad looks modern.

Does a wide carved band trap dirt
Some will collect in the recesses over time, as it does in any textured ring. A soft brush and warm soapy water clears it, and we clean and refresh the carving free of charge for life.

Do emerald cuts show inclusions more than other shapes
Yes. The open step facets hide far less than a brilliant does, which is why we use VVS2 clarity for the centre stone.

Can this ring be resized
Within a modest range. The carving continues around the shank, so sizing means recutting the pattern at the join, which we do as part of our service.

How is this different from your other vintage emerald cut rings
Our other engraved design uses a slim knife edge band with a shallow running scroll. This one is wider, flat topped and carved far more deeply, with milgrain on every edge.
