Curves against a rectangle

An emerald cut is all straight lines. Setting rounded accents beside it softens the transition from stone to band, which a second rectangle would not do. The pears point outward to carry the eye along the finger, and the rounds fill the angle where the pear meets the shank.

Accents that stop

Two stones on each side and then nothing. The band stays plain from the shoulder back, which keeps small stones away from the part of the ring that takes most wear and makes resizing straightforward.

Why the grade matters here

A step cut has a large open table and a clear view straight into the stone. There is no brilliant faceting to hide behind, which is why we set only E colour, VVS2 diamonds in this design.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. This ring was photographed in yellow gold, but every metal is made to order and priced above. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown. Every accent is matched to the same E and VVS2 grade.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The pear accents are cut to suit the centre stone, and the rounds are set last to close the gaps exactly, which is what keeps the group reading as one shape. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

About the photographs

Some photographs show this ring with stacking bands or worn alongside another ring. Those pieces are separate and are not included. The ring box shown is our standard packaging and comes with every order.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, working between the accents from underneath. Step cuts have open corners, so avoid knocking the ring against hard edges. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity are the diamonds? The centre stone and every accent are E colour and VVS2 clarity, on all metals and all carat weights.

Does the carat weight include the accents? No. The 2, 3, 4 and 5 carat options refer to the centre emerald cut. The pear and round accents are in addition.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Is this a three stone ring? Not quite. The pears are accents rather than equal partners, and there are rounds between them and the band, so it reads as a cluster.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Close. The accents rise where they meet the band, so a slightly shaped band sits tighter, and we will make one to match.

Can it be resized? Yes, at the back where the band is plain. One or two sizes either way is straightforward.
