Why hide the halo on an emerald cut

A step cut is defined by its straight edges and cropped corners. A conventional halo around it softens that outline into a rounded frame of sparkle, which works on some shapes and fights this one. A hidden halo sits beneath the girdle instead, so the rectangle stays crisp from above while the profile gains a band of brilliance.

The pave shoulders finish the job. Small brilliants lead the eye up the band toward the head, adding the fine sparkle that a step cut deliberately does without. The result pairs the calm hall of mirrors flash of the emerald cut with the lively glitter of the accents.

The emerald cut

Long parallel facets run in steps down from an open table. That openness is why clarity cannot be compromised on this shape, and why every centre stone here is E colour and VVS2 clarity. The cropped corners also make it one of the more robust fancy shapes for daily wear.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. White metal lets the pave and hidden halo read as continuous light. Yellow gold gives the step cut an Art Deco warmth. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The collar is built to your centre stone, the hidden halo is set before the emerald cut goes in, and the pave beads are raised by hand along both shoulders. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Brush around the collar from underneath and along both shoulders. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth, and take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The accents are matched to the same grade.

Does the hidden halo change the outline from above? No. The emerald cut keeps its straight edges. The halo shows in profile.

Can pave stones fall out? It is uncommon when beads are raised properly by hand, which is why we set pave in house.

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes. Nothing projects sideways at band level.

Can it be resized? Yes. The lower shank is plain.
