A concealed halo under a round or an oval is a simple job, because the basket is a continuous curve and the small stones can be seeded around it at even spacing until they meet. Under a rectangle it is a different problem. The wall consists of four straight runs meeting at four corners, and at every corner the setter has to decide whether to mitre the two runs together, leave a gap, or drop a stone into the corner itself at an angle. This ring mitres. Each straight run is set to within one stone of the corner, and the corner then takes a single smaller diamond seated at forty five degrees so its girdle meets both runs squarely. It is the only arrangement in which the halo reads as continuous from every side rather than as four separate rows that happen to be near each other, and it is the reason the profile of a rectangular stone rarely looks as resolved as this one.

Band details

The shank is fine and slightly domed, with pave on the top face only and the lower half left plain. Keeping the band narrow is deliberate, since an elongated centre stone looks longest when the metal beneath it is at its thinnest.
