An oval cut lab grown diamond turned sideways across the finger, held in four claws on a fine plain band. No halo, no pave, no accents. The stone is set low and the shank is drawn as thin as it can safely be made.

Setting a large oval east to west lowers it in a way that matters for daily wear. A north to south oval has to be lifted clear of the finger at both ends, because the stone is longer than the finger is wide and the tips would otherwise press into the skin at the base of the knuckle. Turned sideways, the length of the diamond sits across the widest, flattest part of the finger, so the whole setting can be built lower. The result is a big stone that does not catch on sleeves and does not rock when you close your hand.

Band details

The shank is fine, plain and rounded with a mirror polish, carrying no stones. It meets the underside of the basket directly with no gallery rail between, which is what allows the stone to sit as close to the finger as it does.

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose gold is shown here and it warms the whole ring while leaving the diamond as the only bright element. Yellow gold gives a more traditional contrast. White gold and sterling silver let the band disappear so only the horizontal line of the stone registers. For a shank this fine we recommend 14K or 18K gold for long term daily wear.

Why set an oval east to west?
The stone spans the width of the finger rather than its length, which lets the setting sit lower, stops the tips pressing into the knuckle and gives the ring a broader, more modern line.

Is an east west ring more comfortable?
For a large stone, generally yes. Nothing extends toward the knuckle, the profile is lower and the ring is less likely to snag or rock on the finger.

Does an oval look bigger than a round diamond?
Yes. It spreads the same carat weight over a longer surface, so it presents a larger face on the hand whichever way it is set.
