East West Oval Cut Lab Grown Diamond Ring in a Domed Disc with Star Point Claws

An oval cut lab grown diamond laid sideways across the finger and sunk into the face of a solid domed disc of metal, held by six sharp claws cut directly out of the dome so they read as the points of a star.

Two decisions make this ring what it is, and both are unusual. The first is orientation. Almost every oval engagement ring sets the stone north to south, running with the finger, because that lengthens the hand. Here the oval is turned ninety degrees and set east to west, so it lies across the finger. The stone immediately reads wider and flatter, the ring looks more like a signet or a seal than a conventional solitaire, and it sits lower and more securely against the hand. The second decision is the mount. Rather than a wire basket or a plain rub over bezel, the stone is set into the top of a solid domed cushion of metal, so there is a broad polished curve of gold or silver surrounding it on every side. The six claws are not applied on top of that dome. They are cut out of it, tapering to sharp points that run inward over the girdle, which is why from directly above the setting reads as a six pointed star with the diamond at its centre. The shank is a simple round wire that forks into two arms as it reaches the dome and joins it from beneath, leaving the dome apparently floating clear of the band.

Band details

Is a lab grown diamond a real diamond
Yes. It has the same carbon crystal structure, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale and the same optical behaviour as a mined diamond, and it is graded on the same scales by the same laboratories.

Does the ring come with a certificate
Yes. An IGI certificate for the center stone is included at no extra charge.

What does east west setting mean
The oval is turned sideways so its long axis runs across the finger rather than along it. The stone reads wider, the ring sits lower, and the look is closer to a signet than a classic solitaire.

Does an east west oval look smaller
It looks wider rather than longer. The carat weight is identical, but a north to south oval lengthens the finger while an east west oval spans it, so the same stone gives a completely different impression.

Why are the claws shaped like star points
They are cut out of the dome itself rather than added on top, and tapered to sharp points running inward over the girdle. From above that reads as a six pointed star with the diamond at its centre.

Is this setting secure for daily wear
Very. Six claws in a solid metal dome protect the girdle on every side, and the low profile means the stone is far less exposed than in a raised basket.

Will the dome scratch
A large polished surface will pick up fine marks over years of wear, exactly as a signet ring does. Repolishing during servicing restores it, and it is included for life.

How long does the ring take to make
The dome is carved and the claws are cut from solid metal rather than assembled, so allow eighteen to twenty two working days before dispatch.
