An emerald cut lab grown diamond set sideways across the finger in four claws, on a band whose entire surface is hand engraved and edged with milgrain. There are no accent stones anywhere on the ring. All the detail is cut into the metal itself.

Engraving a shank by hand means holding a graver against a curved surface and cutting a continuous pattern that has to meet itself cleanly all the way round, on a band a couple of millimetres wide. Machine rolled texture can imitate the look, but it repeats mechanically and it cuts to a uniform depth, so it catches light in one flat way. Hand cut work varies fractionally in depth and angle along its length, and that variation is why an engraved band flickers as the hand turns instead of sitting inert. It is also why every one is slightly different from the next.

Band details

The shank is hand engraved along its full length with a fine repeating pattern and finished with milgrain beading along both edges. The inside is left completely smooth and rounded, so none of the surface work is felt against the finger. Because the band carries no stones it can be resized and, if the engraving ever softens after decades of wear, it can be recut by hand.

Choose from 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Yellow gold is shown here and is the right choice for engraved work, because warm metal throws the strongest shadow into the cut lines and makes the pattern legible from a distance. Rose gold does the same slightly more softly. White gold and sterling silver flatten the engraving into a subtle texture rather than a visible pattern.

What is hand engraving?
A pattern cut into the metal with a hand held graver rather than stamped or machined. The small variations in depth and angle are what make an engraved band catch light unevenly and look alive as the hand moves.

Will the engraving wear away?
It softens very slowly over decades, which most people consider part of the character of an engraved ring. In 14K and 18K gold it holds its definition well, and it can be recut by hand if you ever want it sharpened.

What does east west mean?

How do I clean an engraved band?
Warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush worked along the cut lines, then rinse and dry. Avoid heavy polishing cloths, since aggressive polishing is what wears engraving and milgrain flat.
