An east west emerald cut is the one orientation where a concealed halo earns its place twice over. Frequently asked questions

What does east west mean?
The stone is set across the finger rather than along it. A rectangular cut set this way looks wider, sits flatter and gives the ring a modern line that a north to south setting does not.

Why put a concealed halo on an east west ring?
Because turning the stone sideways brings the long face of the basket into view. Setting pave there puts light exactly where the ring would otherwise show its largest area of bare metal.

Why does an emerald cut look so clear?
It is a step cut, with long parallel facets arranged like stairs rather than the many small triangular facets of a brilliant. You get broad flashes of light and an open view straight into the stone.
