Why bezel a round brilliant

A round is the brightest cut there is, so it does not need claws lifting it into the light. What it does need is protection at the girdle, the thin edge where the top and bottom of the stone meet, which is the part that chips. A bezel covers that edge completely and turns the most classic cut into the most practical ring in the range.

Circle against straight lines

The two tapered baguettes are step cut. They do not sparkle, they flash in long flat planes, and their straight edges frame the circle of the centre stone. That contrast between a round brilliant and straight step cut sides is a mid century device and it is the reason this ring reads as designed rather than merely simple.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. A bezel shows more metal than a claw setting, so the colour matters more here than on most rings. White gold and silver, as photographed, keep everything reading cool and icy. Yellow and rose gold warm the stone. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. The bezel is raised around your individual stone and then burnished down onto it without marking the polish, which is slow work and cannot be rushed. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Run the brush around the base of the bezel where it meets the band. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The baguettes are matched to the same grade.

Does a bezel make the diamond look smaller? It covers the very edge of the girdle, so a bezel set round reads slightly smaller than the same stone in claws. Most people find the trade for protection and the cleaner outline worth it.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, unusually well. The baguettes are set level with the band, so a straight band sits flat on either side with no gap at all.

Can it be resized? Yes. The band is plain past the baguettes, so there is clear metal to work with.
