All step cut, on purpose

Most three stone rings mix a brilliant centre with step cut sides for contrast. This one does the opposite and keeps everything in the same family. The result is quieter and more graphic. Instead of sparkle competing with sparkle, you get three flat planes of light that shift together as your hand moves, like a shutter opening and closing.

Why clarity matters most here

Step cuts have long, wide open facets and hide almost nothing. Any inclusion or cloud would sit in plain view through that big flat table. It is the reason every centre stone here is VVS2, a grade at which nothing is visible even under ten times magnification, and why we match the baguettes to the same standard.

The bezel

A rectangular bezel around an emerald cut has four straight runs and four corners, and every one of them has to be true or the eye catches it immediately. The collar covers the girdle, which on a step cut is the most chip prone part of the stone, and keeps the whole ring flush to the finger.

What laboratory grown means here

A laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Rose gold, as photographed, softens what is otherwise a very severe geometry and is a particularly good match for this design. 10K is the hardest alloy, 14K is the everyday balance, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years.

Every centre stone arrives IGI certified

The centre diamond is graded by IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and the certificate comes with the ring at no extra charge. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.

Made to order in our own workshop

Mapple Gems is a family run workshop in Surat, India, where most of the world's diamonds are cut and polished. Straight lines are unforgiving. A bezel wall that runs even slightly out of parallel with a baguette beside it is obvious, so everything on this ring is squared up by hand. Allow two to three weeks for making, plus shipping.

Looking after it

Warm water, mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Run the brush along the two straight seams where the baguettes meet the bezel. An emerald cut also shows fingerprints more than a brilliant, so wipe the table. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming.

Questions we are asked

What colour and clarity is the diamond? Every centre stone is E colour and VVS2 clarity, on every metal and every carat weight. The baguettes are matched to the same grade.

Does an emerald cut sparkle less? Differently rather than less. You get long broad flashes instead of small rapid ones. If you want maximum fire, choose a round or radiant. If you want a large flat table and a calm, elegant stone, this is the cut.

Is the certificate really free? Yes. The IGI report for the centre stone is included in the price on every variant.

Will a wedding band sit flush against it? Yes, unusually well. The baguettes sit level with the band, so a straight band meets the ring in one clean line.

Can it be resized? Yes. The shank is plain past the baguettes.
