An asscher cut moissanite in four claws on a slim band that alternates marquise accents with small rounds around roughly three quarters of its circumference, with a marquise set immediately against each side of the centre stone so the pattern runs right up to the head.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Nearly an eternity

The alternating pattern here does not stop at the shoulders. It continues down each side and around, leaving only a short plain section at the base of the shank.

That coverage changes how the ring behaves. Turn your hand away and a shoulder set ring goes dark, because all its stones face upward. This one keeps catching light from almost any angle, and when you look down at your own hand you see the pattern continuing past your finger rather than ending.

We stop short of a true full eternity deliberately. A short plain section at the base leaves us something to work with if the ring ever needs resizing, which a complete eternity does not.

How this compares with our other alternating asscher rings

We make three rings on this motif. The difference is size against coverage.

Our Marquise Shoulder ring carries the same alternating marquise and round pattern, but only along the top third of each side, with plain polished metal below. It is lighter, less expensive, and easier to resize and to stack.

This one runs the pattern around roughly three quarters of the band and places a marquise hard against the centre stone on each side, so there is no plain metal between the accents and the head.

Our Large Marquise and Round Accent ring is the third option: bigger accents over about half of each shoulder, the most accent carat weight of the three, though less coverage than this one.

Choose this one if you want the ring to sparkle from every angle and do not mind the extra cost and the tighter sizing tolerance. Choose the shoulder version if you would rather have a plain lower shank, easy resizing and a flush wedding band. That is genuinely the whole decision.

The marquise against the head

Setting an accent directly against the centre is a small detail that does a lot. It removes the visual gap between stone and band, so the centre appears to grow out of the pattern rather than being mounted on top of it.

Because the accent nearest the head is a marquise rather than a round, its point aims inward at the centre stone, which draws the eye along the shoulder and into the middle of the ring.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad blocks rather than sparkling.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and every accent is Colorless and VVS too. With accents touching the centre, matching them properly matters more here than on a design where a gap of metal separates them.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Because the accents run right up to the head, a larger centre keeps the hierarchy clear. At 2 carat the band and the centre are closer to equal partners, which some people like.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, where the accents and the metal read as one continuous run of light around the finger, which suits the near eternity coverage. Yellow gold does the opposite, drawing the small metal bridges between accents clearly so you read the alternating rhythm instead of a continuous line. Both are good; they are different rings. Rose gold sits between them. Silver is the most affordable route into this much stone setting. 10K is the hardest and holds fine beading longest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cut a seat for every accent around three quarters of the band, set each marquise lengthways with its points protected, set the rounds between them, then set the centre and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. There are a great many more accents here than on the shoulder version, and each marquise takes longer than a round. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, worked all the way round rather than only across the top. Clean under the centre too, since a step cut shows anything trapped below. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably, but not perfectly. The accents continue past the point where a straight band would meet the shank, so there is a little interruption. A contoured band fits better. Our shoulder set version is the easier one to stack.

Can it be resized? Only within a small range. We leave a short plain section at the base precisely so that some adjustment is possible, but this is not a ring to buy in the wrong size and correct later. Please take the sizing seriously and we will help.

Are the marquise points secure? Yes. Each point is covered by metal rather than left exposed, which is the correct way to set a marquise.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
