Asscher Cut Moissanite Tapered Wheat Engraved Ring in Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

An asscher cut moissanite in four claws on a band that tapers toward the head, engraved along each shoulder with a flowing wheat and scroll pattern and bordered with fine milgrain. There are no accent stones. The band narrows as it approaches the stone, which is the detail that separates this from our other engraved designs.

A tapered engraved band

Our other engraved rings use bands of even width. This one is wider at the shoulders and narrows as it reaches the setting.

That does two things. It gives the engraver more room where the pattern is actually seen, at the sides of the ring, and it slims the metal exactly where it meets the stone, so the centre is not crowded by a thick band running up to it.

It is a quietly practical shape as well. A band that narrows at the top and widens at the sides distributes metal where a ring takes knocks and keeps it light where it does not.

We make six asscher rings with engraved or worked metal. They look similar in a thumbnail and are not the same ring.

Engraved Leaf slim knife edge, simple leaf motif, shoulders only, no stones. The lightest.

Delicate Vine slim rounded band, small sparse twig with two or three tiny flush set stones, mostly plain.

Dense Acanthus flowing engraving over the whole band with no plain ground anywhere, no stones. The densest.

Open Scroll larger separated C scrolls with plain ground between them, heavy milgrain rails, no stones.

Engraved Vine with Diamonds wide flat band with stones flush set into the pattern itself.

This one a tapered band with a wheat and scroll pattern on the shoulders and fine milgrain edges, no stones. The only engraved design of the six with a tapering profile.

Wheat and scroll

The pattern is a running wheat sheaf motif interlaced with small scrolls, cut so the ears of wheat lie along the direction of the band. It is a harvest motif, common in Edwardian engraving, and it suits a tapering shoulder because the pattern can narrow with the metal rather than being cut off.

A geometric pattern on a tapering band looks compressed at the narrow end. A botanical one simply grows smaller, which is why this motif and this shape belong together.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad clean blocks rather than sparkling.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. With no accents anywhere, the centre carries the ring and a step cut hides nothing.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The taper means the band never crowds the stone, so this design suits a smaller centre better than our wider engraved bands do.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which every engraved ring wants, because the pattern is visible only through the shadow inside each cut line and gold gives the deepest shadow. White gold flattens fine engraving considerably. Rose gold suits a harvest motif particularly well. Silver is the most affordable route and engraves cleanly. 10K is the hardest and keeps the cut lines crisp longest. 14K is the everyday balance. 18K is the richest but softest and will soften soonest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We form the tapered band, cut the wheat and scroll by hand so the pattern narrows correctly with the metal, raise the milgrain along both edges, set the stone, then polish for your metal, centre size and finger size. Engraving a pattern that has to change scale as it travels is harder than engraving one that repeats evenly. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush, brushed across the cut lines rather than along them. Engraving filled with hand cream loses its shadow and stops reading. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Never use abrasive polish, which rounds the cut edges permanently. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The band is widest at the sides, where a second ring meets it, and the milgrain edges are fine rather than raised.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably, and more easily than our fully engraved acanthus band, because the pattern is confined to the shoulders and the base of the shank is plain.

Will the engraving wear off? The high points soften over many years. It can be recut. 10K or 14K slows it considerably.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
