Asscher Cut Moissanite Tapered Baguette Three Stone Ring in Silver, 10K, 14K and 18K Gold

An asscher cut moissanite held in four claws with a single tapered baguette set on each side, the wide end of each baguette facing inward toward the centre and narrowing as it runs down the shoulder. The band beyond them is plain. This is a three stone ring, not a solitaire with accents.

Why tapered baguettes

A tapered baguette is a step cut shaped as a long trapezoid rather than a rectangle, so it is wider at one end than the other. Setting the wide end against the centre and letting it narrow outward does something a rectangular baguette cannot: it makes the shoulders appear to flow out of the centre stone rather than sit beside it.

It is the classic Art Deco solution to the three stone ring, and it is the reason this design looks resolved rather than assembled. The eye reads one continuous shape that happens to be made of three stones.

Both side stones are step cuts, like the centre, so the whole ring behaves as one object under light. Nothing here sparkles in the way a brilliant does. Everything flashes together in broad clean blocks.

How this compares with our other baguette asscher ring

Our Channel Baguette Shoulder ring sets several small rectangular baguettes flush inside a channel along each shoulder. It is a band of accents, and the centre remains a solitaire.

This one has a single large tapered baguette per side, set proud rather than channelled, and it is a genuine three stone ring. The side stones are substantial enough to read as stones in their own right.

If you want a row of small step cut accents, choose the channel ring. If you want three stones, choose this one. They are not variations on each other.

The three stone tradition

People often attach a meaning to three stones, past, present and future being the usual reading. We do not think it is our place to tell you what your ring means, and plenty of people simply prefer the proportions. Either way, the arrangement is far older than the sentiment attached to it.

The claws

Four claws hold the centre, one at each cropped corner of the octagon. Corner claws are correct on an asscher because they sit where the outline already turns, so they do not interrupt the straight edges that make the shape read as square. The baguettes are held at their ends, leaving their long faces completely clear.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors.

The cut was patented by the Asscher brothers of Amsterdam in 1902 and became a signature shape of the Art Deco years, which is exactly the period this three stone arrangement belongs to.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and both baguettes are Colorless and VVS too. This matters more here than on most designs, because three step cuts sit side by side and you look straight through all of them. Any difference in colour between centre and sides would be obvious, so they are matched as a set.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. We scale the baguettes with the centre so the proportions hold at every size.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, where the warm metal separates the three white stones clearly and the tapering outline is easiest to follow. White gold is the more period accurate choice, since Deco originals were platinum, and it lets the three stones merge into one continuous bright bar, which is a genuinely different and very elegant effect. Rose gold is unusual on something this geometric. Silver is the most affordable route. 10K is the hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cut the seats for all three stones, set the baguettes square and level with the centre, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Getting three step cuts to sit on exactly the same plane is the difficult part of this ring. A baguette a fraction out of line is visible immediately, in a way a misaligned round never is. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Clean underneath all three stones, because step cuts show anything trapped below them far more readily than brilliants do. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The baguettes sit at the same level as the shoulders and the band beyond them is plain, so a straight band meets it cleanly.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably. The lower half of the shank is plain, which gives us room to work without touching the setting.

Are the baguette corners at risk? The corners are the vulnerable part of any step cut, which is why each baguette is held at its ends with the metal wrapping the corner. It is a secure arrangement, though a channel setting like our other baguette ring is more protective still.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing, and with three of them on one ring it matters three times over.
