An asscher cut moissanite in four claws, surrounded by a square halo of micropave that is set on its top surface and continues down its outer sides, on a plain slim band with no stones on the shoulders at all.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

A halo and nothing else

Most halo rings also pave the shoulders, so the sparkle runs from the head halfway round the finger. This one stops at the halo. The band is plain polished metal from the setting down.

That is a real decision and it changes how the ring reads. With paved shoulders your eye travels along the band and the halo becomes the widest point of a continuous bright object. With a plain band the halo sits as a distinct square, framed by metal, and the eye goes straight to it and stays there.

It also means the halo can be more generous than it otherwise would be without the ring becoming busy, and it keeps the price considerably lower than a fully paved design while putting the stones where they actually do the most work.

Why a square halo suits an asscher

A halo makes the centre look larger, and on a square step cut it does something else as well. An asscher does not sparkle. It flashes in broad blocks and can look quite still on the hand. A halo of tiny brilliants around it supplies the movement the centre deliberately lacks, so the ring has both qualities at once.

The halo here follows the octagonal outline of the stone rather than being a plain square, which matters more than it sounds. A square halo around an eight sided stone leaves awkward gaps at the cropped corners. Following the outline keeps the frame parallel to the stone the whole way round.

The pave continues down the outside faces of the halo, so the ring keeps sparkling when seen from the side rather than only from above. That is the detail that separates a well made halo from a flat one.

The claws

Four claws hold the centre, one at each cropped corner, reaching in over the halo. Corner claws are correct on an asscher because they sit where the outline already turns, so they do not break the straight edges the shape depends on.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and every halo stone is Colorless and VVS too. This matters especially in a halo, because a ring of white accents sitting directly against the centre will show any warmth or cloudiness in the middle stone immediately. Matching them properly is most of the work.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. A halo adds visual size, so a 2 carat centre in this setting reads closer to what most people expect from 2.5 or 3 carat. If budget matters, that is the honest way to use a halo well.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, which is the strongest choice for a halo because there is no colour break between the halo stones and the metal holding them, so the frame reads as pure light. Yellow gold draws a visible warm outline around the halo, which some people prefer because it separates centre from halo instead of blending them. Rose gold does the same more softly. Silver is the most affordable route. 10K is the hardest and holds fine pave beading longest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cast the halo frame, set every accent on the top and down the outer faces by hand, set the centre in its four claws, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Setting the outer faces takes as long again as setting the top. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush. Work around the underside of the halo, which is where dirt collects and where it dulls the sparkle fastest. Clean under the centre too, because a step cut shows anything trapped below it. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Yes, well. The halo sits above the band and the shank is plain and slim, so a straight band meets it cleanly. This is easier to stack than most halo rings, precisely because the shoulders are bare.

Can it be resized? Yes, comfortably. There are no stones in the shank at all, which makes this one of the easier halo rings to resize.

Does a halo really make the stone look bigger? Yes, genuinely, by increasing the overall bright area. It does not make the centre stone itself larger, and at close range anyone can see where the centre ends and the halo begins. We would rather say that plainly.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
