Step 1
Design & Selection
We finalise your design and hand-pick the certified center stone.
Save 20%An asscher cut moissanite surrounded by a halo of pointed metal petals, each petal holding a single brilliant round and radiating outward from the centre so the outline of the ring becomes a star rather than a square. The band is a plain polished split shank with no stones on it.
We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.
Every other halo we make follows the outline of the stone. A square stone gets a square frame, and the ring stays square.
This one does not. Each accent sits inside its own pointed petal of metal, and those petals radiate outward at different lengths, so the silhouette becomes a lotus or a sunburst. From a distance you do not read a square ring at all. You read a flower with a bright square at its centre.
That is a genuinely unusual thing to do with an asscher, and it is the reason to choose this ring. It takes the most rigidly geometric stone in jewellery and puts it inside the least geometric setting we make. The contrast is the design.
The Pave Halo ring is a flat, delicate micropave frame on a plain band. Square outline.
The Cluster Halo ring is large claw set rounds, heavy and substantial. Square outline.
The Bezel Halo ring puts pave outside a bezel rim. Square outline.
This is the only one of the five that changes the silhouette. If you have looked at halo rings and found them all rather similar, that is because they mostly are, and this one is not.
Each petal is a pointed oval of metal, closed at the tip and open enough at the centre to let its stone show fully. The petals alternate in length around the halo, longer at the four sides and shorter at the corners, which is what produces the radiating rhythm rather than a flat ring of identical shapes.
The metal is doing as much work as the stones here. On a pave halo the metal is hidden deliberately; on this one it is the pattern, and the stones punctuate it.
Practically, a petal encloses its stone on all sides, which makes these accents better protected than beaded pave and means there is nothing to catch on knitwear despite the elaborate outline.
The band divides into two smooth polished strands as it approaches the head, and carries no stones at all. That is deliberate restraint. The halo is doing a great deal, and a paved band underneath it would tip the ring from striking into cluttered.
An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad blocks rather than sparkling.
Sitting a still, hard edged stone at the centre of a radiating flower is what makes both halves read clearly. The petals are soft and moving, the centre is sharp and still.
Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and every petal stone is Colorless and VVS too.
Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.
Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The petals scale with the centre. At 2 carat this is a pretty, flower sized ring; at 4 or 5 carat it becomes a genuine statement piece.
Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, and this design more than any other we make depends on it. The petals are metal, and metal is only legible as a shape when it has colour to distinguish it from the white stones it holds. In yellow gold you see a gold flower set with white stones. In white gold you see a slightly odd shaped halo, because petals and stones read as one material. Rose gold works nearly as well as yellow and suits the botanical idea. Silver is the most affordable and reads between the two. 10K is the hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.
Nothing is taken off a shelf. We form each petal, set its stone, assemble the halo so the alternating lengths stay symmetrical, then set the centre and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Symmetry is everything on a radiating design: one petal slightly out of line is visible immediately. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.
Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush worked between the petals from above and below. The gaps between petals collect more than a flat halo does. Clean under the centre too, since a step cut shows anything trapped below. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.
Will a wedding band sit flush? No, and we would rather say so plainly. The petals extend outward and downward past the shank, so a straight band cannot sit against it. A contoured band shaped around the petals is the only good answer, and most people wear this ring on its own.
Can it be resized? Yes, reasonably. There are no stones in the shank at all, so we have plain metal to work with.
Do the points catch? Less than you would expect. Each petal tip is rounded and polished rather than sharp, and the stones sit inside the metal rather than proud of it. It is not a snag free ring in the way a bezel is, but it is far better behaved than its outline suggests.
Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
