An asscher cut moissanite in four claws on a slim band carrying large marquise accents alternating with large rounds, shared prong set with small beads between them, running about halfway down each shoulder. The accents here are substantially bigger than on our other alternating designs.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Larger stones, fewer of them

The marquise and rounds on this ring are big enough to read as individual gems rather than as a decorative texture. You can count them at arm's length and see the shape of each one.

That is a different proposition from micropave or from small alternating accents. Fewer, larger stones catch light in distinct flashes rather than a continuous shimmer, and each marquise is long enough that its pointed outline is clearly visible.

It also means more carat weight in the accents than any other alternating ring we make, which is reflected in the price and, more usefully, in how substantial the ring looks on the hand.

Please read this if you are comparing our alternating marquise rings

We make three and they are genuinely different. The distinction is size against coverage.

Marquise Shoulder uses small accents over about a third of each shoulder. The lightest and least expensive of the three, easiest to resize, stacks flush.

Three Quarter Marquise Eternity uses small accents but runs them around roughly three quarters of the band, with a marquise hard against the centre. The most coverage and the most sparkle from odd angles.

This one uses the largest accents of the three over about half of each shoulder. Not the most coverage and not the cheapest, but by some way the most substantial stones.

In short: choose the shoulder version for lightness, the eternity for coverage, and this one for stone size. There is no version that is all three, and we would rather set that out than let the photographs decide for you.

Shared prong setting

Each small bead of metal between two accents does duty for both of them, holding one edge of each. That is what allows stones this size to sit close together without a thick wall of metal between them.

It also exposes more of each stone than a channel or a bezel would, so more light reaches them from the side. On accents this large that is a real gain rather than a technicality.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad blocks rather than sparkling.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity, and every accent is Colorless and VVS too. Matching matters here because the accents are large enough that any difference in colour beside the centre would be visible.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. Because the accents are substantial, a 2 carat centre shares the ring with them rather than dominating. From 3 carat upward the centre clearly leads.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in white gold, where the accents and the setting read as one continuous run of stones. Yellow gold draws the small shared prongs as visible gold beads between the stones, which separates them and makes the alternating rhythm much clearer. On this design, with accents this large, yellow is genuinely the more interesting choice. Rose gold sits between the two. Silver is the most affordable route. 10K is the hardest, 14K is the everyday balance, 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We cut a seat for every accent, set each marquise lengthways with both points covered, set the rounds between them, form the shared prongs, then set the centre and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size. Large shared prong accents are less forgiving than pave: one stone sitting a fraction high is obvious. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush worked between the accents. Clean under the centre too, since a step cut shows anything trapped below. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Reasonably. The accents stop around halfway, so a straight band meets plain metal, though the accents sit slightly proud where they end.

Can it be resized? Yes, within a moderate range, because the lower half of the shank is plain.

Are the marquise points secure? Yes. Both points of each marquise are covered by metal, which is the correct way to set one and the reason marquise take longer to set than rounds.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
