An asscher cut moissanite held in four rounded ball claws on a substantial band formed into deep fluted ribs that run right around the finger. There are no accent stones. The whole ring is stone and worked metal.

We make it to order in our workshop in Surat, India. Family run, every ring finished and checked by hand.

Pricing note

This band is heavier than our standard, around 3 mm rather than the 2 mm our base prices are built on, because deep flutes need real thickness to be cut into. A width surcharge of 50 dollars in silver and 200 dollars in gold is included in the prices shown. Nothing is added at checkout, the price you see is the price.

Fluting, not engraving

The ribs on this band are formed in the metal itself. Each flute is a rounded channel running across the band, repeated all the way round, so the surface is a series of raised and hollowed curves rather than a flat face with lines cut into it.

That difference matters. Engraving is a shallow cut that softens as the ring wears. Fluting is structural, so the pattern is as deep as the band is thick and it will still be there in fifty years. If you want worked metal that genuinely lasts, this is the more durable answer.

Visually the flutes catch light in a repeating sequence of bright ridges and dark hollows, so the band moves as your hand moves. It gives you movement without a single accent stone, which is why this ring reads as far more decorated than its stone count suggests.

How this compares with our other asscher rings with no accent stones

We make three asscher rings with no stones on the band at all.

The Engraved Leaf ring has a slim knife edge band with a botanical pattern cut into the shoulders. It is delicate and quiet.

The Smooth Bezel ring has a flat plain band with nothing on it, and is the most minimal ring we make.

This one is the heaviest and boldest of the three, and the only one where the band is the loudest element. It suits a hand that wants presence without sparkle.

The ball claws

Four rounded claws, one at each cropped corner. Ball claws rather than pointed ones is a deliberate choice here. Sharp claws would look thin against a chunky fluted shank, whereas the round heads echo the rounded ribs of the band, so head and shank belong to one another.

Corner claws are also the correct approach on an asscher. They sit where the outline already turns, so they do not interrupt the straight edges the shape depends on.

The stone

An asscher is a square step cut with cropped corners, so its outline is an octagon that reads as a square. The facets are cut in concentric squares that draw the eye down into the stone, an effect jewellers call the hall of mirrors. It flashes in broad clean blocks rather than sparkling.

Setting a still, geometric stone above a band with this much movement is the whole idea of the ring. The centre stays calm while everything below it shifts.

Every centre stone is Colorless in body colour and VVS in clarity. A step cut has large open facets you look straight through, so the grade is not optional.

Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, which in a step cut shows as depth rather than fire, and at 9.25 on the Mohs scale it stands up to daily wear.

Choose the centre from 2 carat up to 5 carat. The band is substantial, so we would lean toward 3 carat or above to keep the proportions right. At 2 carat this reads as a band led ring, which is a legitimate look but worth expecting.

Metals

Choose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. Shown in yellow gold, which is by some distance the strongest choice here, because a fluted surface needs colour to show the difference between a lit ridge and a shadowed hollow. In yellow gold the ribs are unmistakable. White gold flattens them considerably, since a bright white surface reflects too evenly for the hollows to read, and we would gently steer you elsewhere if white is what you want. Rose gold works nearly as well as yellow. Silver shows the flutes clearly and is the most affordable route into a heavy band. 10K is the hardest and keeps the ridges crisp longest. 14K is the everyday balance. 18K is the richest but softest. White gold is rhodium plated and needs replating every one to two years.

Made to order

Nothing is taken off a shelf. We form the band, cut and true each flute so the spacing stays even all the way round, set the stone, then file and polish for your metal, centre size and finger size after your order arrives. Polishing a fluted band takes far longer than polishing a flat one, because every hollow has to be reached separately without rounding off the ridges. That is how we offer twenty one ring sizes and forty combinations.

Care

Warm water, a drop of mild washing up liquid and a soft toothbrush worked along the flutes. Hand cream sits in the hollows and dulls the pattern quickly, so this ring benefits from cleaning more often than a plain band would. Clean under the stone too, since a step cut shows anything trapped below. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Take it off for the gym, gardening and swimming pools, and keep it away from bleach.

Questions we are asked

Will a wedding band sit flush? Not perfectly. The fluted surface is not flat, so a plain band meets it as a series of small contacts rather than a clean line. Most people wear this ring alone, and it is substantial enough to carry that.

Can it be resized? Within a moderate range. There are no stones to worry about, but the flutes must stay evenly spaced across any join, so we would rather get the size right first time.

Is a fluted band comfortable? Yes. The inside of the band is smooth and rounded, the flutes are only on the outer face. It feels like a substantial plain ring on the finger.

Will inclusions show in a step cut? Not at VVS. That grade is what makes a step cut worth doing.
