Moissanite Oval Cut Rings

How to choose an oval moissanite ring

The single number that decides how an oval looks is its length-to-width ratio. Divide the stone's length by its width and you get a figure between about 1.20 and 1.70. Around 1.35 to 1.50 is the range most people find balanced — clearly elongated, still soft. Below 1.30 an oval starts to read as a slightly squashed round. Above 1.55 it becomes noticeably narrow and dramatic, which some people want and others regret once it is on the hand.

The second thing to check is the bow-tie. Every oval has a darker band running across its middle where light is not returned to the eye — that is simply what happens when you stretch a brilliant cut. A well-proportioned oval shows a faint one you have to look for. A poorly cut one shows a hard black bar. Ovals show this more than rounds do, which is exactly why cut quality matters more in this shape than in any other. Ask us for a photo of the actual stone under normal light if you want to see it before approving.

Which carat size suits your hand?

Moissanite is sold by diamond equivalent weight (DEW) because it is less dense than diamond — the millimetre size is what you actually see.

An oval covers noticeably more finger than a round of the same weight, because the weight is spread lengthwise rather than down into the stone. If you like the look of a 2 ct round but not the price, a 1.5 ct oval gets you most of the visual size.

Oval in different metals

Oval centre stones are usually held by four or six prongs, and prong security is where metal choice actually matters. 14K gold is the sensible default — hard enough that the prongs holding an elongated stone stay put through years of daily wear. 18K is warmer and richer in colour but softer, so the tips wear faster and want checking every couple of years. 10K is the hardest and palest. 925 sterling silver keeps the price down but scratches easily and is best treated as a starting point rather than a forever setting. All are available in yellow, white and rose.

White metals suit an oval particularly well, because the pointed ends of the stone blend into the setting rather than being outlined against a contrasting colour.

How our made-to-order process works

Choose your ratio, carat and metal and we model the ring in 3D first. You get a render showing the real proportions — how long the oval actually reads, where the prongs sit, how the band meets the stone. If the ratio looks wrong to you on screen, we change it and re-render. There is no limit on revisions and no charge for them. Casting only starts once you approve.
