Carat advice written for rings does not transfer to pendants. A ring is examined at arm's length, often deliberately. A pendant is glimpsed from several feet away, against fabric and skin, usually while the wearer is moving. Anything too small simply does not register.

Shape changes apparent size
Two stones of identical carat weight do not look the same size hanging from a chain. Elongated shapes β oval, marquise, emerald, radiant β spread their weight over a longer outline, so they cover more visible surface than a round stone of the same carat. If the goal is presence, an elongated cut gets you there at a lower carat weight.

Chain length affects the size you need
A pendant sitting higher on a 16 inch chain is closer to the eye and reads larger. Drop it to 20 inches and the same stone sits further down, against more fabric, and loses a little presence.
