Buying Jewellery for a New Parent

The recipient least able to wear most of what gets bought for them β€” which narrows it usefully.

Written by the Mapple Gems workshop, Surat Β· Updated 6 October 2026

Short answer

Choose something with nothing to catch and nothing to lose: small bezel or flush-set studs with locking backs, a short solid chain with a soldered pendant, or a low-profile band. Avoid dangling earrings, long chains and raised prong settings for the first year β€” small hands grab, and a raised setting catches on everything. And do not buy a ring for the hand right now: finger size after a pregnancy is genuinely unpredictable for months.

This gift gets bought on sentiment and worn on a schedule nobody thinks about at the time. A little practicality makes it something that actually gets used.

Ring size after a pregnancy is one of the few genuinely unpredictable measurements in jewellery, and it can take six to twelve months to settle β€” so a ring bought now is a coin toss. Fluid retention, weight change and simple time all move fingers, often unevenly between hands, and frequently the knuckle and the base change by different amounts. We see the consequence constantly: rings bought as new-parent gifts arriving back for resizing within the year, which on an international order means three to four weeks plus a second customs clearance in each direction. If a ring is genuinely the right gift, there are two sensible routes. Buy it later β€” a first birthday is a perfectly good occasion and the size will have settled. Or buy it now and specify reversible adjustability: sizing beads inside the shank, or a euro shank, both of which can be altered without a full resize. What you should not do is guess from a pre-pregnancy figure, because that number has stopped being reliable and nobody involved will realise until the ring does not fit.

What works, and why

Piece Specify Why
Small studs Bezel or flush; locking backs Nothing to grab, nothing to lose
Short pendant 40–45 cm, soldered jump ring Out of reach of small hands
Plain or flush-set band Low profile, comfort-fit Nothing raised to scratch
Fine bracelet Safety catch; extender Adjustable as things change
Long drops, long chains β€” Avoid for the first year

The last row is the practical one. A dangling earring or a long chain within reach of a small hand is a pulled piercing or a broken chain waiting to happen, and it means a lovely gift sits in a drawer for a year.

Build it for constant handwashing

An underrated point and it changes what to specify. New parents wash their hands many times a day, and that has three effects on jewellery.

Rhodium wears faster on white gold, so replating comes round sooner β€” which is a real argument for choosing yellow or rose gold, or platinum, none of which need it at all. Soap films the pavilion of any set stone, so a piece looks dull far quicker than expected; ask for an open gallery so it can actually be cleaned from underneath. And rings come off at sinks and get left there, which is the commonest way a ring is lost β€” a pendant avoids the problem entirely.

If you want to mark the birth specifically

  • Interior engraving on a band β€” a date or initials, placed centred on the upper interior, never at the base of the shank where a resize cuts through it. Around 20–30 characters fits a 5–6Β mm band.
  • A hidden stone set into the inside of a shank. Hidden detail is the durable version of decoration β€” interior work stays crisp for decades because nothing touches it.
  • A piece designed to be added to β€” a chain that will carry a second pendant later, or a stacking band with room for another beside it.
  • Remaking something they already own that no longer gets worn. It keeps the material and the history and usually means more than anything new β€” but ask first, and never have an old piece polished before it has been identified.

The specifications that decide whether it lasts

The same ones that always apply, and they matter more here because the piece will be handled constantly.

Solid metal, never plated β€” if β€œgold” needs a preposition, it is not solid, and plating wears through where it rubs. Gram weight stated in writing, which is the one figure verifiable against a public gold price. Shank at 1.8Β mm if it is a ring. Lobster clasps and soldered jump rings on anything that hangs. And on studs, locking or screw backs rather than butterflies, which loosen with every removal.

If the budget will not stretch to solid gold, solid 925 silver is the honest downgrade for earrings and pendants β€” bezel-set, since silver is soft and prongs are its failure point. It is a better gift than a plated piece of any size.

Timing and delivery

Order well ahead if it is made to order: production and transit are two separate numbers and a checkout estimate usually covers only the second. A gift for a birth is one of the few occasions with no flexibility at all in the other direction.

If it is crossing a border, put the recipient’s own phone number on the waybill β€” they are the importer of record, and a customs query sent to a number nobody is checking is the commonest reason a parcel sits at a depot. Choose landed or duties-prepaid pricing so nothing is owed on delivery, and keep the signature requirement rather than authorising a safe-place delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy a ring as a new-baby gift?

Not sized from a pre-pregnancy figure β€” finger size can take six to twelve months to settle and often changes unevenly between hands. Either buy later, or specify reversible adjustability such as sizing beads or a euro shank so it can be altered without a full resize.

What jewellery is practical for a new parent?

Anything with nothing to catch and nothing to lose β€” small bezel or flush-set studs with locking backs, a short solid chain with a soldered jump ring, or a low-profile band. Long drops and long chains are best avoided for the first year.

Does constant handwashing affect jewellery?

Yes β€” rhodium wears faster on white gold so replating comes round sooner, soap films the pavilion and dulls set stones, and rings come off at sinks and get left there. Yellow gold, rose gold or platinum avoid the replating entirely; an open gallery lets a stone be cleaned.

How can I mark the birth on the piece itself?

Interior engraving placed centred on the upper interior rather than at the base of the shank, where a resize cuts through it; or a hidden stone set inside the shank. Both are durable because nothing touches interior work.

Tell us it is for a new parent.

It changes the setting, the metal and the hardware β€” and it is the detail that decides whether the piece is worn this year or next.
