Sizing & Fit

How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet

Two minutes, a strip of paper, and you will never guess again.

Bracelet sizing is simpler than ring sizing, but it trips people up for a different reason: your wrist measurement and your bracelet length are not the same number. Skip that distinction and the bracelet arrives too tight.

Here is the method, and the allowance that turns one number into the other.

The method

1. Cut a strip of paper about half an inch wide, or use a soft tape measure or a piece of string.

2. Wrap it around the wrist just below the wrist bone β€” where a bracelet naturally settles, not up the forearm.

3. Snug, not tight. It should touch the skin without pressing into it.

4. Mark where the strip overlaps, lay it flat, and measure to the mark. That is your wrist measurement.

Turning it into a bracelet length

Add roughly half an inch for a comfortable fit that moves and drapes. Add closer to an inch if you prefer a bracelet that sits loosely and slides.

Wrist measures Comfortable fit Looser drape
5.5–6 in 6.5 inch 7 inch
6–6.5 in 7 inch 7.5 inch
6.5–7 in 7.5 inch 8 inch
7–7.5 in 8 inch 8 inch or above

If you fall between two lengths, size up. A slightly long bracelet drapes; a slightly short one cannot be worn.

Style changes the allowance

A rigid tennis bracelet sits where you put it, so the half-inch allowance matters most here β€” too tight and it strains at the clasp rather than curving with the wrist.

A paperclip or link bracelet is more flexible and more forgiving, and many people deliberately wear these a little longer so they slide. If you are choosing between styles first, see Bracelet Styles Explained.

Measuring for a gift, without asking

Do not try to measure her wrist. Instead, take a bracelet she already wears, lay it flat in a straight line with the clasp closed, and measure end to end. That number is a bracelet length already β€” no allowance needed, because it is one she has chosen and kept.

If there is nothing to measure, 7 inches fits the majority of women. More ways to work around this are in How to Buy Jewelry as a Gift Without Knowing Her Size.

A note on made-to-order

A bracelet made in a specific length after you order it is not a piece that can be casually swapped afterwards, so it is worth spending the two minutes with a strip of paper rather than estimating. If the measurement is genuinely a guess, size up rather than down.

FAQs

How much bigger than my wrist should a bracelet be?

About half an inch for a comfortable fit, or closer to an inch if you like it to slide.

What is the average bracelet size for a woman?

Seven inches fits most people, which suits a wrist measuring around 6 to 6.5 inches.

Where exactly should I measure my wrist?

Just below the wrist bone, towards the hand β€” where a bracelet naturally sits rather than higher up the forearm.

Should I size up or down if I am between lengths?

Up. A longer bracelet simply drapes lower, whereas one that is too short cannot be worn at all.
