Gold Karats Explained: 10K vs 14K vs 18K

What the karat number really means — and which to choose for your jewelry.

When buying gold jewelry, you'll see numbers like 10K, 14K, and 18K. They tell you how pure the gold is — here's what each means and how to choose.

What “karat” measures

Pure gold is 24 karat, but it's too soft for everyday jewelry. Karat numbers tell you how much pure gold is in the mix: 18K is 75% gold, 14K is about 58%, and 10K is about 42%, with the rest being stronger alloy metals.

The trade-off: purity vs durability

Higher karat means richer color and more pure gold, but also a softer, pricier metal. Lower karat is more durable and affordable but slightly less rich in tone. 14K is a popular sweet spot for everyday rings.

Karat Best for
18K Richest color, luxury feel
14K Best balance of durability & color
10K Most durable & affordable

FAQs

Is 18K or 14K gold better?

18K has richer color and more pure gold; 14K is more durable and affordable. 14K is a popular all-round choice for daily wear.

Why isn't jewelry made from pure gold?

Pure (24K) gold is too soft for everyday wear, so it's alloyed with stronger metals for durability.
