Setting it on an engraved shank rather than a plain or pave one pulls the design toward the antique. The scroll pattern is cut into the metal by hand, not cast, and the milgrain along both edges is a row of tiny beads run with a knurling wheel, which is what gives an old ring its soft outline instead of a hard machined edge.
