The dome is polished in stages until the fall from the claw line to the outer rim is completely even, because a metal halo has no stones to hide an imperfect surface. The white halo matters here: yellow metal touching the girdle of a colourless stone can cast a faint warm tint into it, and keeping that immediate frame white avoids the effect entirely.
