The taper has to be cut on both sides of the band at exactly the same rate or the ring will look bent when you view it edge on, and because the surface is highly polished the reflection running along the shank shows any waver immediately. The trellis head is the second piece of work: each prong is a separate arm that crosses the one beside it and is soldered where they meet, which distributes the load around the stone rather than concentrating it at four points. The finished head is compact and low, so the oval sits close to the finger despite the sculptural shank underneath. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for daily wear. A trellis head leaves the sides of the stone unusually open, so light enters from almost every direction, and moissanite's higher refractive index turns that into strong coloured fire.
