The curve of the pear shoulder has to follow the curve of the oval closely enough that no daylight shows between them, and the two stones must sit at the same height or the eye reads the row as crooked immediately. Our setters cut both seats from the same reference plane and set the sides before the centre, so the oval can be adjusted last to close any remaining gap. The point of each pear is covered by a V claw, the standard protection for the most fragile part of that cut. At 9.25 on the Mohs scale against a diamond at 10, it is hard enough for everyday wear. Its refractive index is higher, so it returns more coloured fire, and pear cuts show this particularly well because their long facets throw light in a different direction from the oval beside them.
