A half moon is cut with one straight edge and one curved edge, so when it is placed with the straight edge facing inward it meets the girdle of the oval along a continuous line with no gap of metal between the stones. The three stones therefore read as one unbroken sweep of diamond across the finger rather than as three separate stones sitting near each other, and the curved outer edges carry that sweep smoothly down into the shoulders. Under the head the shank divides into two strands that wrap around each other in a slow twist, and the goldsmith has set only one of them. The pavé strand carries a line of small round brilliants held by shared beads, while the other stays plain and highly polished, so as the twist turns you see alternating passages of bright diamond and bright metal down both sides of the finger.
