Closest to the centre stone sits a round brilliant large enough to register as a real stone rather than a chip. Beyond it, further out along the shoulder, a marquise lies at a slight angle with its long axis following the curve of the finger. So the eye travels outward from a big oval, to a medium round, to a small pointed marquise, and the design fades out rather than stopping. That descending sequence is a very old device in jewellery and it does something a row of equal stones cannot, which is make a ring look as though it grew outward from the centre. Underneath, the band is not a single bar. It divides into strands that cross over one another and open into elongated loops along each shoulder before rejoining at the back, so there is visible daylight through the shank from the side.
