A plain rolled rim gives a hard mechanical edge, which is exactly right on a modern ring and wrong on a ring that wants to look old. Running milgrain around the outside of the rim breaks that edge into a row of tiny beads, so instead of one continuous bright line the outline of the stone is a fine chain of highlights. It reads as antique work rather than as engineering. The four small claws over the rim are the second antique borrowing. They are not structurally necessary once a bezel grips, and on a nineteenth century ring they would have been there as belt and braces. Kept here, they break the oval outline at four points and stop the bezel reading as a plain closed ring of metal. Underneath, the shank splits well before it reaches the head and the two arms sweep outward and up to meet the bezel at its widest points, leaving a clear triangular opening on each side.
