The marquise is far too small to read as a side stone, but its pointed outer end draws a line away from the centre in both directions, which visually lengthens the head. The round sits in the gap that would otherwise be bare metal between the marquise and the claw, so the group reads as one continuous shape rather than as two separate stones.
