It is not only a shape. Those arms are structural, bracing the head from both sides and carrying the load into the shank instead of concentrating it at a single joint, which is why a cathedral is the sturdier way to mount a large stone. Rising also lifts the head slightly, which leaves clearance for a wedding band to sit flush underneath rather than knocking against the pavilion. Under the stone, spanning between those two rising arms, is a gallery arch, and it has been pavé set with small round diamonds rather than left as a plain bar of metal. That arch does the same job as a plain gallery wire, tying the two sides of the head together and stopping any flex at the claws, but it also catches light coming in from underneath and throws it up into the pavilion.
