Adding pave to the shoulders is the change most people ask for, because the line of small stones continues the length of the oval down the finger and makes the whole ring read longer. It is the lightest possible addition: no halo, no side stones, nothing that changes the outline of the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eClaws at the sides, not the tips\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe claws sit on the long sides of the oval rather than at the ends. The tips of an oval are its thinnest points and a claw pressing there is where damage starts. Placing them at the sides also leaves the full length of the stone visible, so the shape is not shortened by metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003ePave that stops halfway\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe shoulder stones run about halfway down each side and then the band goes plain. Pave all the way round photographs well and wears badly, because the stones under the finger take the abrasion and the ring cannot be resized without cutting through set metal. On a well cut stone it is barely noticeable. On a poorly cut one it is a black stripe that no setting will hide. We reject stones where the bow tie is strong, which is the single most useful thing anyone can do when choosing an oval.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhat laboratory grown means here\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA laboratory grown diamond is a diamond. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a mined stone. Ours are grown by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature methods, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eMetals\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eChoose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. It states the carat weight, the E colour grade, the VVS2 clarity grade, the measurements and the girdle inscription, and confirms in writing that the stone is laboratory grown.
