It has a small table, a high crown, a deep pavilion and an open culet, and it was cut by candlelight for candlelight. Instead of the fast white sparkle of a modern brilliant, it gives you broad, slow flashes of light and colour that move as your hand moves. People describe it as chunky, or as looking like it has depth you can fall into. Both are fair.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis one is cut elongated rather than square, so the outline is a soft cushion that is longer than it is wide. That shape flatters the finger and makes the stone read larger than its weight suggests.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhy a bezel\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA bezel is a continuous collar of metal that wraps the girdle of the stone and is burnished down onto it. It is the oldest setting there is and still the most secure. Nothing sticks up to catch on a jumper, a glove or a child's hair, which makes it the setting we recommend to nurses, climbers, gardeners and anyone who works with their hands.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is a trade off and we would rather say it plainly. A bezel covers the girdle and a little of the crown, so slightly less light enters from the side than in a claw setting. It is crystallised carbon with the same cubic structure, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index of 2.42 and the same dispersion as a stone pulled out of the ground. The only difference is where it grew. Ours are produced by chemical vapour deposition and high pressure high temperature growth, then cut and polished by hand. This is not moissanite, not cubic zirconia and not a simulant of any kind. A gemmologist testing it will read diamond, because it is diamond.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eMetals\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eChoose 925 sterling silver, or 10K, 14K or 18K gold in yellow, rose or white. It is shown here in 14K yellow gold, where the warm rim makes the most of the cut. 10K gold is the hardest of the three alloys and the most resistant to knocks, 14K is the balance most people choose for daily wear, and 18K is the richest colour but the softest metal. White gold is rhodium plated and will want replating every one to two years to stay bright.
