The gap does something else as well. On a solid shank the ring's outline against the finger is one continuous edge. On a split shank the skin visible through the window breaks that outline in two, and a broken outline is read by the eye as lighter, which is why a split shank ring looks delicate even when it carries more stones than the solid version.
